Would a 600 watt amp push a jl audio w7?
Any amp will power it. Stick with at least what the manufacturer recommends for the minimum. Almost all have a recommendation.
"Underpowering" will not damage a sub, but what is known as clipping can. Simply put, clipping is when the amplifier "runs out of power" to supply the sub. This creates a square wave, instead of the normal sine wave, and the harmonics with it carry more power than a standard sine wave which is the reason a driver will heat up quicker. Therefor, the sub reaches it’s thermal limitations faster than normal, possibly melting the voice coil.

Money is not a factor, but how much would each of them cost? I want the best in sq and spl. rank them each on a scale of 1 through 10 (10 being the best) on sq, spl, and overall.
and what amp should i power them with?
The RE XXX without a doubt. The FI could be louder maybe. But, the XXX is like King of subs. They weigh 78 lbs each. JL W7 might yield the best sq but wont be near as loud as those other 2. The RE and FI both rms at 2000 watts if I’m right and the JL W7 rms at 1000. So twice as much power is needed for those two subs. If it were me I would go with the W7 because I am more of an SQ guy. Also you save tons on amplifiers, big three, caps, alternator, battery.
Hope this helped.
To answer the question the way you asked it:
I’d get "Amp Lee" to do it since he is retired, if his knees can handle it.
I suppose you mean "what kind of amp do I need to drive/power 2 JL audio W7 speakers adequately?" Those are one set of power hungry speakers. With a 1.5 OHM nominal impedance you are going to workout some amps to death or blow the speakers when the amp clips. If you look at the speaker impedance curves that come with the speaker documentation you will probably find that a some point the speaker will present your amp with close to 0 OHMs impedance. That is a direct short. Your amp better be able to handle that kind of load without blowing up.
Stay away from cheap amps. If the amp is only spec’s watts then run away as fast as you can. If it spec’s watt’s and nothing about minimum impedance, keep looking. If it spec’s talk about about watts into minimum ohms and nothing about RMS, then divide all numbers by 2. A good rule of thumb is you need an amp that will be able to supply 2 times the maximum rated current to avoid clipping. Then you fuse the speakers to protect them from over current problems.
Look at the Optidrive 4000 for a reasonable cost amp. Of course you need 1 of them for each speaker. Should be able to provide 2000 watts RMS into 1 OHM.
Another choice is Clif Designs 1200W High Current Amplifier 800W RMS per channel @ 0.5 ohm
Maybe the Rockford Fosgate Power Series T10001bd 1000 Watt Class-bd Mono Amplifier 1000 W x 1 @ 1 Ohm
Absolutly! One of the best sounding Speakers I have heard. But If you just want something to make your trunk rattle, Then go to a pawn shop. I hear they always have deals.
i have a JL W7 just curious what amp i should get not JL amps either too expensive
and how should i wire it ?
thx ![]()
Check out Quantum amps. They are fairly strong and inexpensive. Buy the 2000.1 it is mono, and one ohm stable.
i got a jl woofers w7, the magnet is loose, i guess from too high watts amp, how do i fix it?
LOL If there arent any screws or bolts on the back then you are s.o.l.
The best way to do it is 1 to 1, splitting the signal only from the receiver. RCA Jack splitters a cheap and very easy to install. 1 amp to one sub will give the best life to both components. Make sure everything has solid connections with the battery and a ground.
i would call JL Audio and see what they charge to fix the problem. The reason being is that speaker is capable of some serious pressure in the box. If not fixed correctly you will have a bigger problem in the end.
i have tow subwoofers jl audio w7 13 i want only one amp for my subs what is the best one
this subwoofer for my frinds not for me ![]()
well to get an amp to run those will cost quite a bit considering that they are big power consumers, the ohm load is a problem too but wire them both to a 1.5ohm load, which means both of them must be wired at 3 ohm and then both dropped on the mono bloc amp that i have picked out for you. i have a couple but i dunno the price on the one brand. these amps are strong and less expensive than most other brands and is one ohm stable to handle your load. these subs that you have are comp rated subs and are usually only used for sound off comps and db drags. sound quality may not be good for these if you listen to music on this system but try this amp out and it has enough power to pound them into submssion and mybe more but this is the first link.the other is another possiblity but the stats are missing on the site but i have two of these and i know the specs. 2400w x 1 @ 1ohm, 1150 w x 1 @ 2 ohm, and it costs less than the one before. the last is you need to find a dealer in your area to get but are well worth the price for the massive power they put out. that’s the third link. good luck.
